We have seen personally the rise in popularity of CBD massage and other spa treatments that include CBD oil and CBD creams.

What is CBD?

Before we dive into how CBD impacts wellness, let’s first take a look at what CBD is. CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found in hemp plants. It is capable of interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, and that’s how it exerts most of its effects. Unlike its counterpart, THC, CBD consumption does not lead to intoxication. This is why it is so popular, it can be used safely without getting the marijuana related ‘high.’

The truth is that the complex biology of CBD is not yet completely clear. There is still a lot of work to be done to find out all that CBD can do for a person’s mind, body, and overall well-being. There are several discoveries that have been made so far, but there isn’t enough evidence so most are dismissed simply as “claims.” But consumers should not be so quick to dismiss these claims. Much of what used to be “simply claims” has now been backed up by concrete scientific studies.

There is scientific evidence available that suggests that CBD can help those dealing with anxiety disorders. This might be because of its interactions with CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. These receptors are located in the central and peripheral nervous system, and they can act on serotonin receptors in the brain. 

People with anxiety normally have low levels of serotonin. CBD is capable of boosting the release of serotonin to counter these effects. With increased serotonin, physiological symptoms begin to improve as well. These are promising results for those that suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. 

There is also some emerging data suggesting that there are benefits of CBD for those who are suffering from PTSD or anxiety-induced insomnia. There is a need for more research to substantiate these claims. They have not been published, and CBD has only been licensed for use in epilepsy for now. You should, therefore, note that CBD is considered a supplement for now and not a medicine.
